Problem
OpenPhone, a fast-growing business communications platform, came to Lexicon facing a familiar challenge: they had outgrown their original name. While “OpenPhone” clearly described their product and helped establish early credibility, its descriptiveness became a limitation. The name locked the company into associations with business phones, when in reality, they are building much more than a phone. They are redefining how businesses create meaningful relationships with customers.
The team needed a name that could move beyond description to inspiration — one that would carry them into the future and help tell a bigger story.
Solution
Lexicon created Quo, a bold, three-letter name derived from Latin meaning “by which.” Quo represents the platform by which businesses build better relationships and make customers feel valued. It also reflects the company’s mission to challenge the status quo of business communication.
Quo delivers on the creative framework Lexicon established: distinct, expressive, and future proof. Unlike the logical, descriptive nature of OpenPhone, Quo is short, confident, and full of attitude. Phonetically, it has a distinctive sound and look. A single, efficient syllable that is contemporary and memorable. The name originated from the Lexicon team that deliberately knew nothing about the product. In fact, they were tasked with developing names for a new social media startup.
OpenPhone introduced Quo alongside a $105 million growth financing announcement, marking a new chapter for the company.
