Lexicon Has Named the World’s Most Popular App

ByteDance, owners of TikTok, approached Lexicon Branding to name their free, all-in-one video editing app. This user-friendly editor with advanced features makes it easy for anyone to quickly create stylistic videos that can be uploaded to video platforms and shared across social media.

Lexicon set out to design a name that is distinctive in the crowded app marketplace, helps support the app’s story, and is easy to process and pronounce globally. We began by exploring the language of video production and video editing for relevant words and word-parts to use to create new names. Next, we leveraged our industry-leading naming software to pinpoint the most effective candidates. With the help of our in-house trademark team, we selected names that would be legally available. Finally, we leveraged our global network of in-country linguists to identify names that performed best across languages. The winning name: CapCut.

CapCut easily conveys the central ideas of capturing and cutting amazing, shareable videos. The name is relevant, distinctive, ownable, and global-ready. The two crisp syllables are strong, fast, and alliterative to increase memorability (just like TikTok). Together, the name works incredibly well across languages and cultures, and has helped drive the app’s spectacular global success.

As of May 2021, CapCut has been downloaded more than 250 million times around the word from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. CapCut has had the most daily downloads of any free app on the U.S. Apple App Store on multiple occasions, beating out household names like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. In May 2021, CapCut was the eighth most downloaded app in the world among both paid and free apps.

The latest viral app geared toward creators, CapCut’s popularity is an indication of a continuing shift of interest from consumption to creation. While consumption-based entertainment apps like YouTube have seen stagnant interest levels, CapCut’s popularity has surged globally.
