BOSTON (CBS) — Phantom Gourmet recently purchased four boxes of frozen breakfast flatbread sandwiches from a local supermarket.
The quick microwave morning meals were I-Hop, Jimmy Dean Delights, Special K and Tyson Day Starts.
I-Hop finished in last place. Phantom found these small squares unbalanced and unsatisfying. The flatbread was doughy and flavorless, while the egg and cheese were barely noticeable. On the upside, the sandwich is all about the sausage, which delivers a strong maple smell and plenty of sweet and fatty flavor.
A step up from there are Jimmy Dean Delights. The round sandwich comes on soft honey wheat bread with turkey sausage that has plenty of that classic Jimmy Dean flavor in every bite. While a little dry, this is a decent sandwich overall. Where it really lost points was the cumbersome perforated plastic packaging and the annoying two-step cooking process.
The runner-up is Special K. With less fat and calories than the competitors, Phantom was shocked at how good this light and fluffy sandwich tasted. From the soft multigrain flatbread, to the fantastic cheese flavor, to the little kick of spice coming from the pork and turkey sausage, this sandwich was a hit. If you’re looking for a healthier way to start your day, Special K is the one to choose.
At the top of the food chain is Tyson Day Starts. First the bad news, with 390 calories and 22 grams of fat, this certainly isn’t a healthy food. But the good news is it simply tastes great. Unlike other brands, the sandwich comes out of the box like a pizza and is cooked on a silver crisping board. But once Phantom folded it up and took a bite, he fell in love with the croissant flatbread, pork sausage, scrambled eggs and tons of colby and jack cheeses. If you like to indulge in the morning, this is your brand.
