Established in 1983, California's Central Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) encompasses 95,000 vine acres, approximately twice the size of Napa, concentrated in Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and series of east-west mountain ranges (which channel ocean fog and breezes to the region's coastal vineyards) create a wide array of micro-climates. Foggy mornings, sunny, breezy afternoons and chilly evenings ensure slow, even ripening of the grapes, fostering the rich, balanced flavors for which Central Coast wines are renowned.
Acre winemaker Melissa Bates is a longtime champion of the Central Coast AVA and a fervent believer in the superior quality of its grapes and unmatched diversity of its wines. Melissa uses her longstanding relationships with growers in the region to source superior Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes from the finest appellations in Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Because all produce exceptional renditions of these varieties, Acre wines may be from a single appellation one year and multiple appellations the next. Each vintage is selected based on what truly represents the best of the Central Coast in a given year.
To craft Acre, Melissa relies on traditional artisan winemaking techniques, including extended skin contact time to enhance color and flavor extraction and intensity; gentle pump-overs and aeration in tank to maximize color and tannin balance in Acre reds; and the judicious use of oak to mature the wines and provide the structure for aging. As a result, Acre wines are rich, smooth and layered, displaying the Central Coast's characteristically vibrant fruit blended with seamlessly integrated oak tones.
